Celebrating International Friendship Day

At HIS, we want to mark this day too, as the friendships we have with each other are precious to us. Whether it’s between a group of students, teachers or parents – we have all experienced the power of friendship in our lives.

It is said that friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.’ And this is how we have seen many beautiful friendships born in the HIS family.

Abel, Russell, Tristan and Ethan had their friendship cemented during their primary days at HIS – from being teammates on the football team, to shared classes, school lunches and camps – they have celebrated many shared school milestones together and will carry those cherished memories as they embark on a new path after IGCSE.

Read what the boys have to say about their friendship and what this brotherhood means to them …

Russell:

Friendship is a tricky thing, where you experience a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Fortunately, I have been able to experience a much larger portion of ups rather than downs. Friendship means that you are never alone and that you always have someone by your side to comfort you or to have fun with. Being in a friendship with someone means that you’re also able to trust them with secrets and tell them things of high importance. Throughout my lifetime I have been incredibly fortunate to have met Abel and Tristan in my early years of schooling and Ethan a few years later – they have shown me what true friendship is about. From playing side-by-side at football tournaments to laughing our lungs out during lunch periods at the cafeteria. These are all things I will cherish forever and hopefully would get to experience even more with this incredible group of guys.

Abel:

I feel friendship is about caring, loving, supporting and understanding those who are close to you. Personally I have known Tristan and Russell since kindergarten but our friendship really took off when we reunited at HIS. Ethan came along, and his gratitude and kindness made me feel he should belong in our mini friendship group. As friends, we all go through ups and downs but overcoming the downs and enjoying the ups portrays the real strength of our friendship.

Ethan:

Friendship is knowing that the people you care about will always have your back, even when times get tough. Our bond deepened when we became teammates on the same football team. Playing on the pitch alongside them made me realise that nothing comes close to the ties between teammates because we give our best on the pitch for one another. I’m grateful that I got to experience such an amazing friendship on and off the pitch, making lots of memories with them. I hope that when the time comes for us to go our separate ways, we will still be there for each other.

Tristan:

Abel, Russell and I have been friends since preschool, while Ethan came into the picture a little later during upper primary. We have a variety of common interests and the bond we share has strengthened over the years thanks to our love for football. We are all part of an elite competitive team of a football club and we also played on the school team. In other words, we see each other a lot!

Over the years, we have had a lot of fun times and laughs, and some tears too. To me that’s what friendship is all about – being your true self and being accepted for who you are, faults and all. No matter the differences in opinion that sometimes happen, we have always talked it out, shrugged it off and moved on, our friendship still very much intact.

Now that we have finished secondary school and have come to a stage in our lives where each one has their own path to journey on, I believe that this friendship or rather brotherhood we have forged, will last a lifetime. That bond will always be there even though we might not see each other as often as we have before and no matter where we are in the world.

“Friendship improves happiness, and abates misery, by doubling our joys, and dividing our grief.”

~ Marcus Tullius Cicero, Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, philosopher
