Mr. Martin Van Rijswijk, Principal

Bachelor Degree in Education at Massey University (NZ) and Teachers College Diploma at Wellington Teachers College (NZ), Master’s Degree in Education, Post Graduate Diploma in Education from Bath University (UK).

Martin’s over 30 years of teaching and educational experience includes more than 20 years of service in school leadership positions in various international schools around the world. He began his teaching career in intermediate schools in New Zealand, and has since served as a Principal in five different international schools in Malaysia, Thailand, Egypt, Germany and New Zealand.

Martin last served as the Principal of Whangarei School in New Zealand, where he also carried the additional responsibility of being the Lead Principal for the Whangarei Community of Learning, overseeing eight primary and secondary schools in the city of Whangarei. In pursuit of continuing professional development, he has attended education courses such as Concept-Based Inquiry with Dr Lynn Erickson, Assessment Design with Dr Grant Wiggins, The 21st Century Supervision Models with Dr Robert Marzano, and The Harvard Project Zero with Dr Ron Ritchhart.

Mr. Daniel Goldspink, Deputy Principal and Head of Primary

National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) through the UK Department for Education, B.A. (Hons) in Human Geography (Lancaster University, UK), Postgraduate Certificate in Education (London Southbank University, UK).

Daniel completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from London South Bank University and was rated as an ‘outstanding’ teacher according to OFSTED’s assessment criteria, the official body for school inspection in the UK. He has over 15 years of experience in education, including 10 years in a wide variety of leadership roles. Prior to joining HIS, Daniel taught at a large primary school in South London, where he served as a junior school classroom teacher, Head of Year, and curriculum leader. He is passionate about education and strongly believes in the importance of creating bespoke resources and lessons tailored to meet each child’s specific and individual needs. Daniel has always greatly enjoyed working with young people and believes that all students can excel with the right guidance.

At HIS, Daniel has championed the Singapore Maths curriculum program in our primary school, working in collaboration with a mathematics expert from the Singapore Ministry of Education to establish the programme. He is also actively involved in mentoring student initiatives such as the Primary Student Council and leading our PB4L approach to behaviour.

Dr. Felicia Paul Raj, Head of Secondary (Key Stage 3&4)

BSc Biomedical Science from the University of Adelaide, Australia, BSc (Hons) Medical Biosciences and PhD in Medicine (focusing on cancer research) from Monash University in Malaysia.

Felicia’s journey with our school spans nearly a decade, marked by her unwavering commitment to student wellbeing and academic excellence. Succession planning has become a key strategy for the long-term success of our school. Having served as Head of Year, Sixth Form Coordinator, and currently as an Assistant Principal of Secondary (Academic and Pastoral), she brings a deep and holistic understanding of our school’s Strategic Aims.

Felicia’s impressive academic foundation underpins her passion for learning and inquiry. She also holds several notable professional credentials, including the National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL) – accredited by England’s Department of Education for school leaders, Designated Safeguarding Lead training, and service as a Council of International Schools (CIS) Accreditation Evaluator. Additionally, she has mentored teachers pursuing the Cambridge International Award and Certificate in Teaching and Learning (CIATL/CICTL) and serves as an advisor to our school’s teams of Student Council and Positive Culture Ambassadors.

Mr. Paul Lau, Head of Secondary (Sixth Form)

BSc. First Class in Biotechnology (Universiti Sains Malaysia), Cambridge International Diploma for Teaching and Learning (CIDTL)

Paul has been educating our youth in the classrooms since 1998. He has taught the sciences, maths, global perspectives, IPQ and enrichment lessons in the Malaysian as well as international curricula. Paul has also spent the last 12 years in senior management of schools, and was the driver of many platforms and opportunities for increasing student engagement across student leadership, gifted and talented programmes and various academic and non-academic competitions. Prior to HIS, Paul headed the secondary team as well as whole-school CCA programmes at various international schools.

Since joining HIS in 2017, Paul who was put in charge of the design and development of the Sixth Form programme, successfully built a purposeful and exceptional programme with his team that saw many HIS senior students well guided and prepared to transition into life beyond school. Not only had these students thrived in top universities in the world, they are exceptional leaders now in their professions and communities.

A graduate of the Emerging Leader Development Programme (ELDP) and the founder of Project Purpose, Paul has been a key figure in bringing youth leadership and community engagement to the forefront in many events including the MAD Youth Summit 2020.

Mr. Benjamin Allen, Assistant Principal, Primary

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Masters in Education from the University of Sunderland, BA (Hons) in Drama Studies with Education Studies from King Alfred’s College in Winchester.

Ben has over 10 years of teaching experience as a Head of Year and lower primary teacher in the UK, Hong Kong, China and Malaysia. In the last 6 years, he has been focused on teaching a bilingual programme in international schools in Hong Kong, China and Malaysia.Ben has been the Head of Year 1 at HELP International School for the past two years, and has been instrumental in setting up our Bilingual Programme. He is also a Google Certified Educator, Seesaw Educator and Apple Teacher.

Ms. Nadia Halim, Assistant Principal, Secondary (Teaching & Learning)

Master in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London, Cambridge International Certificate in Teaching & Learning (CICTL) with distinction

Since joining HELP International School in 2016, Nadia has played a key role in shaping the secondary school’s academic and co-curricular landscape. A highly respected educator and leader, she brings a wealth of experience both from the classroom and industry. As a Secondary Science teacher and former Head of Year, and more recently, as Second in Department for Science, she has contributed to curriculum innovation and the advancement of teaching practices in the department.

Nadia was also part of the Holistic Learning Team, coordinating experiential learning initiatives such as the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and the Junior Award Scheme for Schools (JASS). Her prior career in the oil and gas industry—holding roles at Petronas in engineering and executive leadership—brings a real-world dimension to her teaching. Under her leadership, the school has seen a significant expansion of cross-curricular learning, including the organisation of the school’s largest-ever STEAM Fair with over 400 participants and the mentoring of award-winning student innovators for the ITEX Competition.

Mr. Peter Mcleish, Assistant Principal, Secondary (Curriculum & Data)

Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Civil) from University of Cape Town, South Africa, Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from University of South Africa, registered with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) and holds a Qualified Teacher Status in the UK

Peter brings over 12 years of international teaching and leadership experience to HELP International School. With a background in Civil Engineering and a deep passion for education, he has taught Mathematics and Physics at GCSE, AS and A-Level in schools across South Africa, Kazakhstan, the UK, and Malaysia. His global teaching experience has equipped him with a strong understanding of diverse educational contexts and a strategic approach to curriculum planning.

Recognised for his ability to make complex concepts accessible, Peter is known for designing engaging and applied learning experiences that connect scientific theory with real-world applications for students.
